Quality of Life Assessments and Euthanasia

Making the decision to say goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most difficult experiences a pet owner can face. At Rowan Animal Clinic, we offer compassionate support and guidance to help you through this emotional time, including quality of life assessments and peaceful euthanasia services when needed.

Understanding Quality of Life

Determining when it’s time to let go starts with assessing your pet’s quality of life. Some questions that can help you and your veterinarian evaluate your pet’s comfort and wellbeing include:

  • Is your pet still enjoying daily activities?

  • Can they eat, walk, and relieve themselves comfortably?

  • Are they experiencing pain or discomfort?

  • What does their overall medical prognosis look like?

  • Will ongoing treatment improve comfort without causing stress?

Our veterinary team encourages open discussion and will help you weigh the good days versus the bad, supporting you in making the best decision for your pet’s emotional and physical wellbeing.

What Euthanasia Involves

Euthanasia is a peaceful, humane procedure that gently allows your pet to pass without pain or fear. Knowing what to expect can make the process more meaningful and less stressful for you and your family.

At Rowan Animal Clinic, we provide a private, comforting environment where you can spend time with your pet before the procedure. The veterinarian administers a carefully selected medication that quickly and painlessly stops the heart, allowing your pet to transition with dignity.

While some involuntary muscle movements may occur after death, please know your pet remains unaware during these reflexes.

Saying Goodbye

Every pet owner approaches goodbye differently. Some choose to be present throughout the entire process; others may prefer to say their farewells beforehand. We encourage you to bring close family or friends for emotional support during this time.

We provide a quiet space and compassionate support so you and your pet can share those final moments with love, comfort, and respect.

Coping with Loss

If you are struggling with the loss of your pet there are lots of places to receive counseling and other help. Groups like the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement, Animal Humane Society, American Veterinary Medical Association, Veterinary Partner all have information on their webpages to help you work through this tough time.
