General Surgery

Many people have questions about various aspects of their pet’s surgery, and we hope this information will help. It also explains the decisions you will need to make before your pet’s upcoming surgery.

Pre-Surgery Preparation

Is anesthesia safe?
Modern anesthetic monitoring makes surgery much safer than ever. Before anesthesia, your pet will receive a complete physical exam to ensure they’re healthy and ready for surgery. We recommend pre-anesthetic blood testing to assess organ function and detect any hidden health issues.

Fasting before surgery
To reduce the risk of vomiting or complications under anesthesia, please withhold food after 10 PM the night before surgery. Water may remain available until 6 AM on the day of surgery. We also ask that you allow your pet time to relieve themselves before drop-off.

After Surgery — What to Expect

Depending on the surgery specific instructions and expectations will be discussed at discharge. A written copy of these instructions will be provided to take home.

Communication & Updates

Our surgical team will call you after surgery with an update on your pet’s progress and a pickup time once all procedures are completed and your pet has recovered. Updates are usually available later in the day when surgery schedules are full, but you are always welcome to call with questions.

Drop-off and pickup
Please allow 5–10 minutes for paperwork and decision confirmations at drop-off, and plan about 10 minutes at pickup to review home care instructions with our team.
